What’s different about Malcolm Hollis?

Anthony Fallon

Senior Chartered Building Surveyor

I have been based in the Bristol office of Malcolm Hollis since 2012 when I joined on a one year placement as part of my sandwich degree at UWE, Bristol. Following completion of my placement, I was offered the opportunity to remain at the Bristol office on a part time basis throughout my final year of university. After graduating with a first class honours degree, I started working full-time as a building surveyor. I became Chartered in November 2015 and was promoted to Senior Chartered Building Surveyor in 2017.

Prior to joining, I held limited practical experience in the field of building surveying and one of the reasons I chose to apply to Malcolm Hollis was the ability to receive on the job experience and the chance to learn from a range of experienced and specialist chartered surveyors. This type of experience proves invaluable in fields such as dilapidations, where the opportunity to view an assortment of surveyor-specific approaches to negotiations provides the strongest possible grounding in the nuances of this area.

Regular manager meetings enable review of workloads, to ensure that the experience requirements of the APC were being met sufficiently in my day-to-day activities. Internal presentations held by fellow surveyors also allow for the development of presentation techniques, with the ability to respond to questions under pressure being a key requirement of the APC final assessment. Full involvement in each instruction is possible from inception to completion, with client contact very much encouraged and nurtured from an early stage.

Aside from work commitments, there also exists the chance to partake in a host of social events and activities that run throughout the year. A particular highlight of mine included representing Malcolm Hollis at Wembley in our 5-a-side football tournament which hosted a number of our top clients, followed by a BBQ and liquid refreshments! It would not be fair to omit a mention too of our summer training day, where colleagues from all of our offices across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe are brought together for various team building exercises and given the chance to get involved in activities that you would not ordinarily come across. I’m not quite sure when the opportunity to drive a tank full of colleagues (including our Partners) through the countryside will arise again!
