Philip Hirst
Senior Associate
My career at Malcolm Hollis commenced as a graduate in 2008 in our Newcastle office. At the time, the office was one year old and since then it has grown consistently year on year, from one surveyor to seven currently. I have had great support to ensure I progress, achieving Chartered status in 2011, gaining promotion to Senior Chartered Building Surveyor in 2013, to Associate in 2015 and to Senior Associate in 2017.
Whilst Newcastle is smaller than some of the longer established offices, as Malcolm Hollis operates as one firm rather than individual offices, we are well supported across all areas. For example, assistance whilst undertaking my APC was provided by other offices, including proof reading submissions, undertaking mock interviews and offering advice on technical aspects to ensure required competencies were satisfied.
You are made aware from an early stage that everyone has an important part to play not only in developing the firm but also ensuring it is a great place to work. There is the freedom to pursue a particular area of expertise once qualified or in my case undertake a wide range of instruction types. The variety of work and experiences is gratifying – I have even surveyed a property in Europe.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my career is the ability to progress. The ethos of work hard, play hard is very much embedded in the spirit of Malcolm Hollis, allowing you to enjoy the rewards with colleagues from an early finish and beers on pay day, to quarterly lunches and genuinely fun team building days, whilst also developing yourself and career.
It is not just my career progression that is rewarding however. From an early stage I have had the opportunity to help shape the Newcastle office, with frequent involvement in business development such as presentations to clients, identifying appropriate services clients require and winning new work, even down to sourcing suitable office premises for us to expand into. The passion I have to nurture the firm, to me proves how good Malcolm Hollis is to work for and the importance of a rewarding career.
